Lens Perception

The artist’s intention is to evoke thought and intention about perception of oneself and view on their environment or path ahead of them. The artist’s purpose was to address the medical lens portrayed on children being hospitalized, as they are seen as patients rather than any of their other characteristics. Because of this lens, the child might have a narrowed or blurred perception of self. These pieces are to address this lens in a contemplative manner. As a reflection on research, the artist’s intention is to address the medical lens, however, the viewer is invited to associate his or her own stories using the given information from each painting. The places in each piece are undefined but familiar relatable to the viewer as not just through medical lens, but also by any lens. The juxtaposition of rain overlaying place challenges the viewer to reframe or refocus their lens by choosing with layer of space to focus on or identify with.

Through the use acrylic paint on six canvases and boards, the artist used cool colors to represent cool light, the artist captures the essence of realm and calmness in space. Using large brush strokes combined with detail work, the focuses and layers encourage movement and direction. The canvases were of different sizes of three 16” x 20”, one “18” x 24”, one “10” x 30” and one 30” x 40” Visual elements of contrast were important to the artist’s representations of perspective.

This series has a contemporary discourse relating to the thematic representations of place and identity. Place can be seen as a concept of cognition and perception as well as an emotional convention. Place is used to evoke personal memory and blurred feelings. Through the rain drops and the cognitions that one may associate to them.
